The best thing about a stroll down memory lane is that you can take that walk again and again and the scenery is always enjoyable. The Class of 1946 met on Saturday, July 19 at noon in the Chickasaw Community Room for their 62nd anniversary. Twelve classmates and 7 guest enjoyed a lovely meal catered by Debbie Sharp with Noveline Norton asking the blessing.
The group renewed old times at Sulphur High School upon the hill North of West 2nd Street and what a wonderful time we all had growing up in Sulphur. We had lots of cafe's, two movie places and two drug stores to go into to get an ice cream cone or a coke or even a sandwich. We didn't have cars (some people did), phones, drugs, TV, or computers. We entertained ourselves and walked there.
Betty Yingling Bradshaw of Lawton was our M.C. telling us how thrilled she is to be a part of this class and how good the time were when we grew up. Some of us have changed, some of us pleasantly plump, a few have added a few creases to our faces and depending on glasses to find the remote control, and some have little plugs in our ears. We were a unique class that will remain with us all our lives. We were sad because some of our classmates were drafted and we were subjected to ration coupons to buy sugar, tires, gas, coffee, etc. We all rejoiced when the war ended in Europe in 1945. When Japan surrendered in August we spent our senior year readjusting and welcoming some of our classmates home that had so honorably served our country. Betty grew up in Drake where her parents ran the Drake Store.
Our first reunion was in 1952 inside the wonderful place of our time, "The Belleview swimming pool and picnic area." The class enjoyed a wonderful get together with a picnic lunch and visiting. Now the place has been filled in and leveled off. No signs of picnic tables or pools or ducks swimming under the bridge as you walked across from the picnic to the swimming area.
