The First Christian Church in Sulphur goes way back in this community. Reverend Tim Kowalski recalled the church’s extensive history in a talk at the meeting of the Arbuckle Historical Society at the Museum on Monday night, Sept. 18.
He described the church’s past as “historical and interesting.” The church observed its 100th anniversary in 2002, having been founded here as a Christian Church in 1902. It met in a public house that was in what was then Sulphur Springs, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory.
Kowalski related the various meeting places where the congregation worshipped before building its current Church. The building was completed and the first service was held on October 7, 1928. It was formally dedicated with a Service on October 14 that year.
