Artists’ Group Planning New Mural Downtown

The Artists of the Arbuckles has begun raising funds for a new mural on W. Third St. across from the downtown Plaza. The mural project was discussed during the A of A monthly meeting on Saturday, June 15 at the Jean Carr Gallery.

The existing mural was dedicated on July 24, 2010. Eventually, water leaks leached through the wall and damaged the stucco surface on which the mural was painted. Some repairs were done last year, but the mural continued to degrade.

Some funds were raised during the recent Spring Fling event downtown, according to the Minutes of the Saturday meeting. The building that displays the mural has new owners who are renovating the structure. Mural painting will have to wait until that project is completed.

The A of A has an agreement with the City of Sulphur to restore the mural painting. The original mural artist, Bob Palmer, is interested in doing the restoration project. However, the A of A is still accepting bids to repaint the mural.
