World champion archer Shiloh Butts, of Sulphur, was one of 24 Americans representing the U.S. in the Rinehart World Archery 3D Championships tournament last September in Terni, Italy. Butts won 3rd.

Editor’s note: One of the two Oklahomans honored at Monday’s Rose Parade, David Wheelis, has ties to this area, including his grandmother, Ella McDonald, of Washington, OK, who grew up in Murray County and graduated from Mill Creek High School, and his aunt, former Sulphur teacher and current Oklahoma Department of Education employee, Jan Foreman, of Sulphur.

Jones noted that hospitalizations due to Covid have increased over the past few weeks “significantly.” He added, “Supply shortages of medication is a major problem for all hospitals.” At the School Board’s monthly meeting recently, they approved the re-employment of Superintendent Matt Holder for the 2022-2023 school year. Also at the meeting, Board Attorney Fob Jones administered the oath of office to newly elected member, Bear Runyan. Holder updated the board about the impact of the current Covid surge at the schools. He said the rising numbers of cases has led to postponement of a couple of dances. He added that the school district had received reports of 22 positive cases among students, and the number might be higher.

Above, is an architect’s rendering of the west entrance to the Sulphur Public Schools Gymnasium and Performing Arts Center which is set for a construction start early next year. The passage of the $35 million in improvements to Sulphur High School last March was among the top stories of the first six months of 2022.
