A few motorists brave the brutal conditions on Broadway Ave., in Sulphur, on Feb. 15 as a record-setting cold wave, bitter wind chills and about four to six inches of snow hit the area. The temperature in Sulphur dropped to a record-setting -14 degrees on Feb. 16 with a wind chill of about -25 degrees.
Christie Pittman resigned her court clerk post in January to join the Chickasaw Nation in a similar position.
The old Dougherty Depot building went home last spring. The structure, which served as a restaurant on S.H. 7, west of Sulphur, for a number of years, was successfully moved back to Dougherty where it originally served as a railroad depot. Sulphur and area fire departments kep busy in the early spring battling multiple fires near Hickory along S.H. 1.
At right, firemen put out a blaze along S.H. 7 and crews battled throughout that day to quell the fires.
Mounds of snow are piled up on Muskogee Avenue in downtown Sulphur after city crews began clearing streets and parking areas in the wake of a historic storm that kept the area in the deep freeze for about 13 days. In photo at right, Sulphur city worker, Joey Muck, uses a backhoe to scrape snow and ice from parking areas in the downtown area. All total, this area received some 10 to 12 inches of snow with drifts of several feet. The first storm hit February 14 with snow and blowing snow and bitter cold. The second storm blew in on February 16 with even colder temps and more snow.

A man and woman died in a swift moving house fire last Thursday despite the heroic attempts by Sulphur firemen to try to save them in a home fully engulfed in flames. A third person, who was able to get out and alert a next door neighbor, sustained minor burns, but survived, according to Sulphur Fire Chief Pete Haines.
Sulphur wrestling homecoming ceremonies were held last Thursday night as the Bulldogs faced off against Ada in the final dual before the Christmas break.
Sulphur basketball homecoming ceremonies were held last Friday evening as the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs took on Kingston in their last competition before the Christmas break.
