Patsy Joan (Giddens) Smith

Funeral services for Patsy J. Smith of Springer were held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 at the Dougherty Baptist Church with Pastor Willard McCartney, Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Dougherty Cemetery. Patsy was born December 19, 1933 in Byars to the late Roger and Catherine Cordilia (Allred) Giddens. She died Friday, Dec. 30, 2016 in Springer, at the age of 83 years and 11 days. Patsy and Keith Kenneth Smith were married on March 11, 1950 in Gainesville, Texas. He preceded her in death on August 4, 2013. Patsy grew up in Dougherty where she attended high school. She later attended Cameron University, majoring in Elementary Education. She spent several years working as a teacher’s assistant in Berwyn. Patsy Smith was truly quite a lady. She devoted her life to caring for others, especially her family. She worked tirelessly to provide the very best for her family. Whatever the event or occasion, Patsy was always there to support and encourage her family and friends. Although she was small in stature, she was a force to be reckoned with. She was very plain spoken and usually spoke what was on her mind, doing so in a loving way, most of the time. Throughout her married life, she and Keith made their home in several places, including Dougherty, Morenci, Ariz., Sulphur, and Porter Hill prior to settling in Springer. She was a member of the Eastern Star, obtaining the office of Worthy Matron as well as a “Mother Advisor” of the Rainbow Girls. Survivors include two daughters, Kendra (Smith) Ford and husband Steve and Becky (Smith) Buchanan, both of Springer; six grandchildren, K.J. Pletcher and wife Katie, Robert Keith Pletcher, Millie Reed and husband Stephen, Kristy Meeks and husband Denny, Steven Ford and Stacy Ford and wife Erin; thirteen great-grandchildren, Kollin Pletcher and wife Cameryn, Cassie Lee and husband Steve, Emma Meeks, Kason Pletcher, Clancy Meeks, Ethan Reed, Joni Pletcher, Trace Ford, Lenora Meeks, Lucille Ford, Henry Ford, Ella Reed and Audrey Ford; two great-great grandchildren, Kaden Pletcher and Breckin Lee; sisters-in-law, Lena Ruth Binderim and Gene Carrol Eppler as well as numerous nieces and nephews, including Ronnie Giddens and wife Nita and Mahonna Clanton. In addition to her parents and husband, Patsy was preceded in death by an infant son, Rubin Buford Smith; infant daughter, Keitha Joan Smith; son-in-law, Buck Buchanan; and siblings, Earnestine, Polly, June, Carrol and Jay. Serving as pallbearers were her grandsons, grandsons-in-law and great-grandsons. Honorary bearers were nieces and nephews.
