Memories Of Joseph Moncrief

Arbuckle Footnotes

This week we have The Indian Pioneer Paper of Joseph Moncrief. This W.P.A. oral history was recorded by fieldworker Jasper Mead on January 22, 1938 at Mr. Moncrief’s residence at Chickasha, OK.

I was born August 22, 1857 in the Choctaw Nation. I am oneeighth Choctaw on my mother’s side. My mother was one-fourth Choctaw. Father was Sampson Moncrief. Mother was Sophia Brashears.

The closest town to the place where I was born was called Skullyville, sixteen miles west of Fort Smith, Arkansas and one mile north of Spiro.
