On March 1, President Joe Biden will speak before a joint session of Congress and deliver his first official State of the Union address. If he chose to be honest about the true state of national affairs, he would acknowledge the plethora of crises of his own making and outline solutions to address them.

The first two weeks of session have been fast and furious. Not a moment has been wasted as all bills were assigned to committee prior to session beginning. This allowed us to start considering bills on the second day of session since the first day was focused on the governor’s State of the State address and approving the Senate rules for this session.

Earlier this month, the U.S. national debt alarmingly surpassed $30 trillion, which means it effectively doubled in just a decade. While there is no easy or immediate solution for tackling the problem of our massive debt, the monstrous size of and rate at which it continues to grow should concern us all and spur on congressional leaders and the president to responsibly address it.
