Federal Fugitive Arrested After Day-Long Manhunt

State AG’s Top 10 Most Wanted Captured In Downtown Sulphur

One of Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond’s top 10 most wanted fugitives was captured in downtown Sulphur last Tuesday.

Jayson Geoffrey Evans, 50, of Sulphur, was the center of an almost all-day manhunt in Sulphur and the Chickasaw National Recreation Area before being captured at approximately 4:00 p.m., authorities said.

The National Park Service was alerted to an unusual campsite in a wooded area of the park and upon investigating the site, found identification of Evans even though he was not at the site at the time, rangers reported.

Other agencies were alerted and the manhunt began.

The attorney general had been partnering with of U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Department to capture Evans and hold him accountable for his alleged actions.

A federal grand jury indicted Evans on June 12, 2024 for assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country, as well as eluding a police officer in Indian Country.

Last Tuesday, April 8, Evans was spotted on a bicycle in downtown Sulphur and officers began pursuing him on foot and by vehicle, according to law enforcement personnel.

Murray County Sheriff Reserve Officer Ike Flowers chased Evans on foot through an alley on West Muskogee Street and eventually tackled him in a vacant low, south of the BancFirst parking lot.

Evans was taken in to custody without incident.

“The capture of Jayson Evans represents the power of cooperation among our law enforcement partners and the vital role that vigilant citizens play in keeping our communities safe,” saidAttorney General Gentner Drummond. “I want to express my sincere gratitude to the FBI, National Park Service, Murray County Sheriff’s Office, Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Department and Oklahoma Highway Patrol for their outstanding work in bringing this dangerous fugitive to justice.”

Agencies involved in the manhunt and eventual capture included the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Oklahoma FBI Swat Team, Chickasaw Lighthorse Police, the National Park Service,Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Murray County Sheriff’s Office and reserves, Sulphur Police Department, Murray County EMS, Chickasaw Nation Emergency Management, and Sulphur firemen Pete Haines and Tracy Laxton.
