Twister That Hit Ada Moved Over Sulphur In Erie Reminder Of April 27 Tragedy

Just about a year after the devastating April 27, 2024 tornado that plowed through Sulphur, local residents again were warned to seek shelter. The warnings came late Saturday evening as multiple tornadoes began touching down in southern Oklahoma.

The tornado that struck northern portions of Ada Saturday night, injuring one and causing scattered damage, had taken a direct path over Sulphur, but remained aloft and did not cause any apparent damage in the area, forecasters said.

According to the National Weather Service, there were seven confirmed tornadoes in southern Oklahoma. Locations where tornadoes occurred included Love, Marshall, Pontotoc, Johnston and Carter Counties.

Next Sunday will be the one-year anniversary of the Sulphur tornado where one person died, numerous others injured and hundreds of businesses and homes damaged or destroyed.

Public events are being planned on Saturday and Sunday in Sulphur to commemorate the tragic developments ofApril, 2024. (See separate story on this page.)

The storm system that spawned this weekend’s tornadoes dumped nearly five inches of rain in Sulphur. Officially, the Oklahoma Mesonet station, northeast of Sulphur, measured 4.94 inches in a three-day total. To date, this area has received 11.36 inches of rain.

And, there could be more rain and severe weather on the way this week and early next week as several storm systems are poised to impact parts of the state, according to forecasters.
