Bulldog 12&U Baseball Team Wins Kingston Tournament
The Sulphur Bulldogs 12&U baseball team reeled off four consecutive victories to win the championship trophy in a tournament at Kingston last Sunday. The game fell on the one-year anniversary of the Sulphur tornado, and coaches said the boys wanted “play for their hometown.”
Following is synopsis of the team’s victories:
Game 1 Sulphur 1, Ardmore Mambas 0
Both teams were strong on the mound, but the Dog’s Ty Flowers singled in the top of the fourth, scoring one run and that was the difference in a strong pitching duel.
Bentley Franks gave up only three hits on no runs in a four-strikeout, five-inning stretch, getting the win for Sulphur.
Other Bulldogs who had one hit were Kasten Pitmon and Briar Thompson.
Game 2 Sulphur 3, Yard Goats 2 In another pitcher’s duel, Sulphur outlasted the Yard Goats, 3-2, in the second game as both teams were again strong on the mound.
Sulphur scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and the Bulldogs went on to record the win as Thompson batted in a run.
Memphis Hiser started on the mound for Sulphur and gave up only one hit and two runs (one earned) over five innings, picking up the win.
Thompson led Sulphur at the plate with one run batted in and Kase Oxley went two-for-two at the plate with singles.
Bulldogs Win
Game 3 Sulphur 4, Kingston 0
Sulphur was first on the board in the bottom of first after Levi Hook grounded out, but Hiser scored after tagging up and Bulldogs ended up blanking Kingston, 4-0.
Hook started the game on the mound for Sulphur, hurling a no-hitter over five innings. He struck out eight and walked three in the win.
Hiser, Savior Gleason, and Pitmon each collected one hit for Bulldogs. Hook and Thompson each drove in one run while Pitmon stole three bases. The Bulldogs didn’t commit a single error in the field.
Game 4 (championship) Sulphur 2, Ardmore Mambas 0
Both teams were again strong on the mound, but the Bulldogs got on the board in the third inning after Franks singled, bringing in two runs. Thompson hurled a one hitter over the five innings, striking out six and giving up no walks.
Franks provided a boost in the middle of the lineup and led the Bulldogs at the plate. Pitmon also had two hits in two at bats and stole two bases.
The Bulldogs are now 14-2 on the season.
