Two Teens Killed, Two Others Hurt In Area Crash

Two teens were killed and two injured, one critically, in a two-vehicle accident last Friday, north of Sulphur, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The accident happened about 9:26 a.m. at the intersection of S.H. 29 and U.S. 177, 10 miles north of Sulphur, the patrol said.

Killed in the crash were a 15-year-old girl and a14-year-old boy, according to the patrol report. Troopers listed the address of the 15-year-old girl in Wynnewood, but no address was given for the boy.

Both victims were passengers in a 2024 Nissan Altima, driven by a 17-year-old Sulphur girl. She was airlifted from the scene to OU Medical Center and treated and released, the report said.

A fourth teen in the vehicle, a 17-year-old Wynewood male, was also airlifted from the scene to OU Medical Center and admitted in critical condition with head and trunk internal injuries, according to the patrol.

The driver of the second vehicle, Karon Rankin, 72, Stratford was not injured, troopers said.

Many other aspects of the crash, including how it happened, the cause, and conditions of both drivers all remain under investigation, the patrol report indicated.

Troopers said seat belts were in use by all occupants in the accident, and airbags deployed in both vehicles.

The front seat passenger in the Altima was pinned until freed by first responders from the Wynnewood Fire Department.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Cory Byrne, of the traffic homicide unit, Trooper Tanner Hamilton, Trooper Doug Brinson and Trooper Tommy Riddle.

In addition to Wynnewood and other first responders, units from the Sulphur Fire Department and the Murray County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. Also assisting were several AirEvac helicopters.

SUV-Bicycle Accident Fatal To Durant Man

In a second fatality crash, a Durant man was killed on Sunday, July 13 after his motorized bicycle was struck from the rear on U.S. 70, about two miles west of Durant, the patrol reported.

Troopers said Kerry W. Welborn, 62, suffered fatal injuries when his bicycle was struck by a Cadillac Escalade, driven by Sarah Dickens, 32, Mead. She was not injured.

According to troopers, both the bike and SUV were westbound on U.S. 70 about 12:04 a.m. when the crash occurred.

Other aspects of that accident remain under investigation.
