County Fair To Highlight Talents Of Local Citizens

County Fair To Highlight Talents Of Local Citizens
One of the more popular events at the Murray County Free Fair, the women’s skillet throw competition, portrayed above, will go off Thursday, Sept. 4 at the Expo Center.

103rd Annual Event Set September 3-6

It is County Fair time all across Oklahoma and Murray County is right in line to join 76 other counties with the 103rd annual event.

You’ll find tagged canning jars filled with pickles and jams, produce from home gardens, fresh baked cookies and pies and 4-H and FFA entries of all types, all competing for the thrill of a blue ribbon. Smells of hamburgers cooking, popcorn popping mixed with the scent of hay, chickens and rabbits fill the air of the County Expo. Old friends gather to chat, reminisce, look at unique handmade items and observe exciting competitions such as cupcake decorating and skillet throwing.

All county 4th graders spend time in educational events on their special “school fair day” and kids of all ages compete in the Lego building contest. Visitors will find something for everyone!

County fairs can be traced to the territory days prior to statehood with the first being traced to 1894 when the A&M College from Stillwater, brought by train, over 600 pounds of judged vegetables, seeds, grains and small animals accompanied by four college professors for folks to see. The destination was the Santa Fe depot in Oklahoma City and the train stopped in Edmound on the way back to Stillwater for “folks on the north side.” This planted the seed for local fairs.

This year’s Murray County Fair will highlight the talents of residents through exhibits in art and crafts, foods, canning, flower displays, photography and many other categories all open to people of all ages from across the county.

A listing of all categories that can be entered was distributed in last week’s Sulphur Times-Democrat and copies may also be picked up at the OSU Extension Office (on the Expo grounds) and at various locations across the county.

Indoor entries will be taken from 1:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 3rd at the Expo with animals checking in from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Thursday morning, Sept. 4th will be the time for entering chickens and rabbits with indoor exhibit judging taking place at 9:00 a.m. The doors will open to the public immediately after judging.

On Friday, Sept. 5th, the livestock judging will start at 9:00 a.m. and the horse show begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Hereford Arena next door to the Expo.

Next week’s Times-Democrat will feature the entire schedule of events so be sure to pick up a copy.

All county residents are encouraged and invited to participate in the county fair, either by entering or attending or both! See you at the fair!
