Big Test Awaits Dogs Friday As They Host LG

Sulphur will meet one of their toughest tests of the district season this Friday when they host Lone Grove in a 7:00 p.m. kick at Agee Field.

The Longhorns (2-3, 1-1), share fourth place with Bristow in District 3A-2, and are coming off a dominating win over Victory Christian last Friday.

Sulphur head coach Corey Cole said the Longhorns are very talented, well coached and compete at a high level.

“Lone Grove has played a tough schedule and could very easily be 4-1 if it weren’t for some tough luck late in a couple of those games,” said Cole.

“Coach Curtis Cole (no relation to the Sulphur coach) of Lone Grove has got his team playing very well and are much improved from a year ago,” said Corey Cole. “They are extremely dangerous on offense and very aggressive on defense and keep getting better every week.”

All three of the Longhorn losses were really close and could have gone either way, the Sulphur coach said.

The Longhorns lost an overtime battle to Anadarko in week zero, 36-35, and followed that with a close, 19-6 loss to Plainview one week later. They rolled over Chandler in the third game of the season, 42-13, and in their first district game against Seminole, they led by two scores for most of the game, but fumbled late and the Chieftains were able to capitalize and score, escaping with a 34-28 win.

Seminole is currently undefeated and ranked #5 in class 3A.

Among some of the Horn’s top players to watch are their quarterback, Tatum Quin, along with several weapons at running back and wide receiver, said Corey Cole.

Big Test

“Tatum Quin leads the Lone Grove offense where he is a true dual threat quarterback and can beat you with his legs or arm,” said Cole. “He has been very impressive on film and we must do a good job of limiting his big play ability.”

In addition to Quin, Lone Grove relies on several running backs and wide receivers along with a big and physical offensive line, said Cole.

“Defensively, they swarm the football and get after you,” said Cole. “We must take care of the ball and play with enthusiasm and a desire to keep getting better to beat a good Lone Grove team.”

The Sulphur coach said there are several areas of work the Bulldogs need to address before Friday night’s game, and one of them is “lackadasical penalties,” said Cole. “That has been something that has been a problem that we must correct immediately if we want to continue to try and be a good football team. We have been stressing the little things in practice in games that make a big difference, and hopefully, we find a way to focus on the little things and take another step forward Friday night.”
