Sulphur Scores On Every Offensive Possession, And Once On Defense

Sulphur scored on every offensive possession and once on defense, exploding to a 60-0 win at McLoud last Friday.

The Dogs (5-0, 2-0) were simply too much for the winless Redskins, scoring multiple points in each quarter for their fifth consecutive win of the season.

While impressive, head Sulphur coach, Corey Cole, said there is still need for improvement in certain areas for the Dogs to get to the next level.

“We played very well at times last Friday in the 60-0 win vs. McLoud,” said Cole, “but there is still need for lots of improvement and corrections of re-occurring mistakes if we want to be the team we are capable of being.”

All total, the Dogs scored nine offensive touchdowns and once on defensive scoop and score. Also on the bright side, said Cole, the Dogs didn’t commit a turnover, an issue that has plagued them in their previous four games.

The Bulldogs were led by the passing of Kale Brakefield’s 10 of 12, 263-yard effort and four TDs, and Maddax Mobly’s six receptions for 189 yards and two TDs. One of Mobly’s TD passes was called back due to penalty, or he would have had an even bigger night, said Cole.

Additional Sulphur offensive firepower came from Bridge Barrett and Carter Cole, each on the receiving end of one of Brakefield’s touchdown passes, and the rushing of Grady Hardoin, who led the team with 62 yards and two scores on only three carries. Traber Sartors added a final TD run to close out a big scoring night.

Cole praised his offensive line for an otherwise good effort throughout the night. He mentioned Caleb Walker and Brody Wallace for some of their best football and George Martinez, Caysen Meador, and AJ Gordon continuing their consistent play.

The Dogs played very tough on defense, holding the Redskins to a 1-14 night on third downs and 5-9 on fourth down attempts, but the success on fourth down will need improvement in the future, according to Cole.

“We were able to play a lot of guys defensively and we were really proud of the way everyone swarmed to the ball, the coach said.”

Cole also praised his special teams and defensive scoring, two areas where they have been focusing on the last few weeks.

“Maddax Mobly had a 59-yard defensive fumble recovery for a TD and Carter Cole had a 64-yard punt return for a TD in the game,” said Cole. “We played really well on special teams besides the missed extra points.”

Overall, Cole said the Dogs played well, but not their best.

“We were a little flat to start the game and that is something we cannot do in the future,” he said. “It was a good win but still there are lots of things that need corrected and fixed. We are ready to get back to the practice field and start working on those mistakes and continue to push towards our goals.”

Game Recap

Sulphur kicker Colten Cole booted the opening kick into the end-zone, and the defense did the rest, forcing a punt on McLoud’s first series.

The Dogs could manage only three yards in two plays, then Mobly sprinted 65 yards for a would-be score, only to be negated by a penalty.

The Dogs moved to the Redskins’ 20 after the penalty, then Brakefield spied Carter Cole and fired him a 20-yard touchdown pass to open their big scoring night. Colten Cole’s PAT kick was good, giving the Sulphur a 7-0 lead with 8:22 left in the first.

McLoud was able to get two first downs on their next series, but were forced to punt, giving Sulphur the ball at their own 48.

Tailback JoJo Gray picked up 17 yards in two runs, while Mobly caught a short, three-yard pass, and Grady Hardoin plunged for four yards to give Sulphur possession at the 23. Hardoin then blasted into the end-zone from the 23 to give the Dog’s their second TD of the young night. The PAT kick failed, but Sulphur led 13-0 with 3:27 left in the first quarter.

The Redskins began their only big drive of the evening, running and passing for three first downs, after the kickoff, but saw all their efforts evaporate when Mobly scooped up a fumble and raced 59 yards for the score.

Cole’s PAT kick was good, giving the Dogs a 20-0 lead with 10:54 left in the second period.

Sulphur then put the petal to metal, holding the Redskins on a fourth down try, then scoring in only three plays to essentially put the game away.

Big plays in the drive were a 10-yard Brakefield to Mobly pass followed by a 31-yard scoring strike by the same duo. The PAT kick was no good, bu the Dogs were in full command, 26-0, with 6:45 left in the second.

The Dogs struck again moments later after forcing a McLoud punt.

Carter Cole weaved his way through a host of defenders on a 64-yard punt return as the Dogs sealed this deal with a 33-0 lead near the end of the first half. Angel Rios’ PAT kick was perfect as the two teams headed to the locker room.

McLoud could only manage a couple of first downs on the opening series of the second half, then the Sulphur offense went to work. Brakefield found tight end Colten Cole on a 30-yard strike, Mobly picked up 13, then Bridge Barrett hauled in a 25-yard scoring strike from Brakefield to give the Dogs a 39-0 lead. The PAT kick failed.

After gaining only one first down, McLoud was forced to punt on their next series, giving the Dogs possession at their own 21.

With 5:34 left in the third period, Brakefield hit Mobly on an electrifying, 79-yard scoring pass as the Dogs took total control of the game. Rios’ PAT kick was good, giving Sulphur a 46-0 lead.

After McLoud failed on a fourth and two, Sulphur took possession at the Redskins’ 41 to end the third quarter. Three plays later, Hardoin gave the Dogs their eighth TD of the night, going 32 yards to the end-zone. Rios’ PAT gave Sulphur a 53-0 lead with 10:13 left in the fourth.

The Dogs ended the game a few plays later after McLoud failed on a fourth down attempt, and gave the Dogs possession near their 36.

After several short runs from Jackson Haggard, Traber Sartors ended the scoring for the Dogs, going 17 yards for their final TD. Rios booted the PAT give the Dogs a 60-0 lead.
