Downtown Building Coming Down

Downtown Building Coming Down

Demolition work on a historic, downtown Sulphur building has been ongoing for the past two weeks. The structure, built in the early 1900’s, was destroyed in the April 27, 2024 tornado that ravaged downtown Sulphur and surrounding neighborhoods, and is finally coming down.

The building is located in the 100 block of East Muskogee Avenue. A one-block section of Muskogee Avenue was sealed off to traffic for the past 10 days while demolition work continues. Currently, the road closure is down to one-half block on the western end of the street. The work is expected to take another week or so, officials indicated.

The structure has housed a number of businesses over the years. The second story of the building was used in the early days as residential housing, but has been empty for decades.
