Both Teams Gunning For Playoff Spots As Postseason Nears
Sulphur will put their undefeated record on the line this Thursday in a key, Class 3A-2 shootout against the talented Bristow Pirates.
Both teams have rich football traditions and both will be gunning for playoff spots as the two squads meet in a fall break game one day earlier than normal.
Sulphur (6-0, 3-0) is coming off a dominating win over the Lone Grove Longhorns last week, while Bristow (3-3, 2-1) let one slip away last Friday in a loss to Mannford, 21-18.
Sulphur stands atop the district with a spotless record and 45 tie-breaker points with Perkins-Tryon (4-2, 2-1) in second place with 15 tie-breaker points, Bristow (3-3, 2-1) third with 14 tie-breaker points and Mannford (5-1, 2-1), fourth with 3 tie-breaker points.
Rounding out the bottom four teams in the district are: Lone Grove (2-4, 1-2), Seminole (4-2, 1-2), Victory Christian (2-4, 1-2), and McLoud (0-6, 0-3).
Sulphur head coach Corey Cole said this week the Dogs will meet one of the most talented teams in the district when they travel to Bristow on Thursday.
“They have speed all over the field and it is by far the biggest offensive and defensive lines that we will have seen to date,” he said on Monday as he gets his team ready to go on the road in a big district test.
Last season, the Pirates made it to the quarterfinals behind the play of their outstanding quarterback, Promised Johnson, who Cole said “is their guy on offense. He can beat you with his legs or can pick you apart with his throwing ability as well.”
Cole said the Pirates are big and physical and get after you offensively and defensively.
He said his team will need to take care of the ball and play their brand of football to win.
“We will have to take care of the ball and play efficiently on both sides of the ball,” he said. “We will need to neutralize their team speed with our physicality. It is a short week with the game being on Thursday so our guys must be mature in the changes made on a short week and understand what’s at stake and keep playing good Bulldog football.”–
