Five area fire departments worked throughout the day last Wednesday to contain a downtown building fire in Davis.
According to fire officials, flames broke out at TJ’s Resale store in the downtown business district about 10:45 a.m., and quickly spread, engulfing the entire building.
Smoke and flames billowed up out of the building, located at the corner of Main Street and North 2nd Street, prompting a response from area fire departments.
Witnesses at the scene said it was just thick, black smoke at first, then flames began shooting high into the sky.
One of the departments assisting Davis in containment efforts was the Sulphur Fire Department, who sent their aerial ladder truck. Also sending trucks and firefighters were Pauls Valley, Joy, and Wynnewood, according to officials.
People in the area of the fire were evacuated, and streets closed off, according to Davis Police Chief Dee Gregory. There were no injuries.
According to reports, an adjacent NAPA Auto Parts building sustained some smoke and water damage, but a fire wall and fire suppression efforts prevented the spread of flames.
Reports indicated that the building was a total loss and that the state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.
