Sulphur Sorosis Club honored those Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice by planting a Color Oklahoma Wildflower Garden behind the Veterans graves at Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur last Friday. The wildflowers will bloom next Spring marking America’s 250th Birthday.
CNRAProject Manager Linda Richards and CHRA Biologist Julie Hoffman provided special assistance for the project which was supervised by Color Oklahoma Chair Monica Bartling from Waurika.
City of Sulphur employees Joey Muck and Estean Priest marked off the 200 ft. square wildflower garden area and carefully mowed the area close in preparation for the seed sowing.
Planting the Wildflower garden was part of a statewide Oklahoma Native Plant Society grant to the 18 clubs in General Federation of Womens Clubs in Oklahoma (GFWC-OK). Sulphur Sorosis Club is the local GFWC-OK Club.
The wildflower seeds were specially blended by Johnston Seed Company to include wildfl owers for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. They are expected to begin blooming in mid-April or early May and will require minimal care once established.
GFWC-OK and Color Oklahoma provided a special sign which was placed in the middle of the seeded Wildflower Garden. A QR Code is printed on the sign which may be scanned by a smartphone providing information about the specific wildflower varieties planted.
