Maddax Mobly Awarded District MVP With 6,841 All-Purpose Career Yards
The Sulphur Bulldog’s all-purpose yards’ leader, Maddax Mobly, was named Class 3A-2’s Most Valuable Player, and 10 of his teammates joined him on the podium in one of the biggest award hauls in school history.
The 11 Sulphur players were all key cogs in guiding the Bulldogs to a 13-1 season record, and winning the silver ball, coming up a few points short of three-time winner Lincoln Christian in the state championship game.
In addition to the 11 Bulldogs named to the All-District team, the Sulphur coaching staff was awarded the Class 3A-2 Coaching Staff of the Year.
The staff is headed up by Corey Cole, in his third year at the helm. He is assisted by Will Coffman, Keith Garrett, David Gilliam, Linn Marshall, Denton Miller, Zach Patterson, and Ty Ferguson. The district awards were announced last week.
Sulphur swept through 13 consecutive games this season, mostly by blowout margins, and took down two reigning state champions, Washington and Davis, in their first two games. From there, it was nothing but net as they went through the remainder of their schedule and playoffs with ease, reaching the state championship game opposite Lincoln Christian in one the most highly anticipated match-ups of the year in any class. In the end, LC made one more big play in that game to win the title, but it wasn’t easy for the team that allowed only 30 points to district opponents all year as Sulphur took it to the limit in a 24-21 loss.
This was Sulphur’s second consecutive trip to the state championship game. Last year, they lost to the same LC Bulldog team by a narrow, one-point margin in the game’s waining moments.
In addition to Mobly, the 10 other Sulphur players winning district awards included:
