2nd Half Surge Leads Dogs to Win Over Bethel

2nd Half Surge Leads Dogs to Win Over Bethel

Despite Over A Week Off, Sulphur Performs Well In Home Win

After more than a week off due to ice and snow, the Dogs sprinted back onto the hardwood last Saturday, hosting Bethel in the OSD gym.

Head Sulphur coach Grant Bates said despite some sluggishness, the Dogs rallied in the second half to get the win, 63-52.

“From the snow, we had a long break between games and practices, that’s of course rare for this time of year,” he said. “Because of that, I thought we came out a little sluggish and were a little off sync early but we came together in the 2nd half.”

Bates said Bethel used a their two talented guards to their advantage in the first half, but the Dogs rallied with good position play in the second half to preserve the win.

“Bethel has two talented guards that did a good job of creating offense for them, and I thought they had a really good game plan mixing in and out of a bunch of different defenses trying to keep us off balance.,” he said. “It was a good team win for us. Every player got involved in some way and made the necessary play when their number was called.”

Bates praised several players on the Dog’s roster including his senior point guard and team leader, Bridge Barrett, for his outstanding play in the game.

“He did a great job of putting others in scoring position throughout the game,” said the coach.

He also said and senior forward Colten Cole and junior guard Ethan Sales “both had great nights on both ends of the court.”

Another player Bates praised in the Dog victory was sophomore Garin Watson. “He showed great toughness in rebounding and winning 50/50 balls.”

Leading Sulphur in the win were four Dogs with double digit scoring. They included: Ethan Sales 17 points, Bridge Barrett 16 points, Colten Cole 13 points, and Mavric Lowrance 10 points.

After hosting Marietta Tuesday in the OSD gym, the Dogs will go against Dickson on Friday, also in the OSD gym, then travel to Chickasha on Saturday.

The junior high teams were at home vs. Kingston Monday and were set to meet Lone Grove on Thursday, also at home.

Looking further down the road, the Dogs will travel to Lone Grove on Tuesday, Feb. 10, then get ready for their annual senior night activities on Friday, Feb. 13 vs. Kingston. They will close out the regular season, hosting Marlow on Monday, Feb. 16 in the OSD gym.

The Dogs will begin Class 4A post season play in the district tournament set for Feb. 20-21, followed by regional tournament play February 24-28, and Area Tournament March 5-7. The state tournament is scheduled for March 10-13.
