Filing Period Opens Feb. 9 For Three Council Spots

Positions In Sulphur Wards 1, 3, And 5 To Be Decided In April 7 Election

The filing period for three positions on the Sulphur City Council will begin on Monday, Feb.9 and continue until Wednesday, Feb. 11, according to the Murray County Election Board Secretary Rhonda Thomas.

Candidates wishing to file must submit a Declaration of Candidacy to Sulphur City Hall (located at 600 W. Broadway, Sulphur) February 9, 10 or 11, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m, said Thomas. Candidate filing packets are available on the State Election Board website at https://oklahoma.gov/elections/ candidates/candidate-filing.html and at Sulphur City Hall.

Thomas said that in addition to the Declaration of Candidacy, candidates must also submit a Voter Registration Verification Form, which can be obtained from the County Election Board or by logging into the OK Voter Portal at https://oklahoma.gov/ elections/ovp.html. Information on the Voter Registration Verification Form must match the information provided on the Declaration of Candidacy.

Summers reminded candidates that Contests of Candidacy must be filed no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, and may only be filed by another candidate for that office, unless a candidate files unopposed. Contests against unopposed candidates may be filed by contacting the County Election Board, she said.

The three Sulphur council spots up for election during this cycle are Wards 1, 3 and 5. Incumbents in those positions are: Alan McKay (Ward 1), Darrell Cole (Ward 3), and Dan Gordon (Ward 5).

The Murray County Election Board is located at 703 W. 11th, Sulphur and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Early Voting Begins Feb. 5 In Roff School District Election

Early voting begins Thursday, Feb. 5 for voters registered in the Roff School District. Voters who will not be able to make it to the polls on Election Day have the option of voting early at their County Election Board located at 703 W. 11th, Sulphur.

Murray County Election Board Secretary Rhonda Summers said early voting is open to all voters. “You do not need to provide an excuse to vote early. Oklahoma allows early voting for all elections conducted by the County Election Board or State Election Board—from school board and municipal elections to state and federal elections. This is a great option for those who will be out of town on Election Day or who want to avoid long lines,” Summers said.

Filing Period

Early voting is available Thursday, Feb. 5 and Friday, Feb. 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Murray County Election Board, located at 703 W. 11th, Sulphur. Summers reminds voters that early voting is not available at polling locations.

Election Day Reminders And Tips

Voters will head to the polls on February 10th for the Roff Schools Special Election and the Elmore City – Pernell Schools Special Election. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Murray County Election Board Secretary Rhonda Summers recommends voters with questions about their eligibility or polling place call before Election Day. “We provide a number of additional services to voters on Election Day, so it can get very busy. If you have any questions, we strongly suggest you call or come by the week before Election Day if possible. If you find that you do have a question on Election Day, however, don’t hesitate to call.”

Summers says the State Election Board’s OK Voter Portal is the easiest way for voters to verify their registration, locate their polling place, and view a sample ballot. The OK Voter Portal can be found at oklahoma. gov/elections/ovp.

The County Election Board reminds voters to bring a current federal or Oklahoma state-issued photo ID, or federally-recognized tribal ID to their polling place. An official Voter Identification Card can also be used as proof of identity. If you forget your ID, you may still cast a provisional ballot by signing an affidavit. Provisional ballots will be verifi ed and if valid, will be counted after Election Day and before the election is certified.
