Sulphur High School student Mikayla Newport has been selected as All-State vocalist for the seventh year. This is unprecedented for a junior in the state of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Music EducatorsAssociation (OkMEA) sponsored this year’s Oklahoma All-State Honor Festival Concerts at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Tulsa PerformingArts Center last week. The OkMEAAll-State Treble Chorus was conducted by Dr. Andrea Ramsey, an international composer, conductor, scholar and music educator who has conducted at Carnegie Hall. Mikayla’s All-State odyssey began attending Sulphur public schools since kindergarten. Foundations of music classes in school and private lessons in vocal and piano led to numerous live theatrical roles and performances of drama, musicals and concerts since 2018.
Professional film acting classes from 2021-2026 further enhanced Mikayla’s repertoire of skills into the growing film industry in Oklahoma. She was able to film in a variety of scenes live on location in most of the major movies produced in Oklahoma since 2020. These include: the movies “Reagan” in Guthrie; and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (based upon very dramatic Oklahoma history) in Osage County; as well as an NBAOklahoma City Thunder television commercial, all in 2021; the movies “Twisters” and “The Book of Jobs” in 2023; and “The Last Rodeo” in 2024.
Mikayla uses her vocal talent to help, encourage and inspire others. She has honored and supported Veterans through concerts at Veterans Centers and other venues such as nursing homes, churches, Rotary, hospitals, and public veterans and Christmas programs since 2018.
Honor Choir USA recently accepted Mikayla into their elite vocals program. For over 20 years “The Best of the Best” as they are known, annually comprise less than 2% of High SchoolAll-State vocalists from all across the USA. They performed a live concert honoring Veterans at the Pearl Harbor Memorial on the Deck of the USS Missouri Battleship where World War II officially ended. Honor Choir USA 2025 also performed live concerts at Kawaiaha’o (Hawaii’s oldest church) and at Ala Moana Center Stage in the world’s largest open air shopping center. They also performed during an authentic Hawaiian Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center on the North Shore, as well as several other venues during their week long concert tour.
She aspires to become an elementary school teacher and inspirational counselor for children and youth, and seek creative opportunities as an actress in faith-based and family friendly films.
