Wins Over Lone Grove, Madill Give Sulphur Momentum For District Tournament Saturday
The Dogs picked up wins over Lone Grove last Tuesday and at Madill on Saturday, but lost to 10th ranked, Class 3A Kingston on Friday as they get ready to close the curtain on the 2026 regular season. Only a game on Monday was left, and Sulphur will have the rest of the week to get for the Class 4ADistrict Tournament this Saturday at Cache.
At Lone Grove, Sulphur picked up a solid win over a senior laden Longhorn team who were 14-5 coming into the game.
Bridge Barrett pumped in 32 points to lead Sulphur in a 54-43 win over the Longhorns. Mavric Lowrance provided six assists in the game and Colten Cole led in rebounding with seven.
“I thought we did a good job defensively of keeping them from getting into a rhythm and on the offensive end we did a good job of getting our guys in the right spots to have opportunities to score,” said head Sulphur coach, Grant Bates. “It was a good conference road win for us.”
The Dogs weren’t as fortunate on Friday, however, losing to Kingston, 52-38.
Not only is Kingston is another senior laden team, but the Dogs lost starter and top team scorer, Bridge Barrett, early in the second quarter.
Bates said Kingston has a good mix of talent from top to bottom, but losing Barrett was a big blow for his team as they faced an 11-point deficit going into the second half.
“I thought we did the necessary things on both ends of the court to climb back in the game,” said Bates. “We just couldn’t get shots to fall. Credit Kingston and their ability to hold us off down the stretch,” he said.
Kale Brakefield and Ethan Sales each had 9 points in the loss. Brakefield also had 7 rebounds in the game.
Although Madill is a much improved team over a year ago, the Dogs were able to hold off a Wildcat rally down the stretch to win, 59-50.
Bates cited Brakefield’s 18-rebound effort as one of the highlights for his team in the win.
Madill rallied with hot, threepoint shooting in the fourth quarter to a make a run at the Dogs, but Sulphur was able to close them out late for the win.
“I was proud of our ability to play a tough, disciplined, and smart game on both ends of the court,” he said.
Ethan Sales led the Dogs in scoring with 15 points with Lowrance and Cole each adding 10. Sales and Brakefield each added four assists.
Sulphur will use the remainder of this week to prep for this Saturday’s District Tournament. They will travel to Cache for a 7:30 p.m. match-up against the Bulldogs out west.
The Lady Bulldogs will get things started first in a game beginning at 6:30 p.m.
