History Made Thomas, Wynn Capture Lady Dog’s First-Ever State Wrestling Titles
Sulphur wrestlers Jolee Thomas, and Parker Wynn made history last Saturday at the Class 5A girls state wrestling tournament. The duo became the first two female wrestlers in school history to stand atop the podium as state champions.
It was a big win for the fledgling Lady Bulldog program as girls wrestling becomes more popular in Oklahoma. Sulphur’s boys have a long and rich tradition in the sport, and continued that with two state placers at the meet, Jonah Cole and Maddax Mobly. Each won third, Cole at 132 pounds, and Mobly at 175 pounds.
Thomas dominated at 125 pounds, capturing the Class 5A state title with a 25-0 major decision victory over Perry’s Sayben Owen in the championship match. Her powerful performance capped an undefeated season.
In the 190-pound division, Wynn powered her way to a title as well, defeating Comanche’s Brook West , 4-0, in the finals to clinch her first state championship as a freshman. Her strong showing makes her one of the most exciting young wrestlers in the state and underscores the depth of Sulphur’s burgeoning girl’s program.
Both wrestlers entered the state finals after strong seasons, and at the regionals two weeks ago where Thomas was a West Regional champion and Wynn as a runner-up. The two then delivered when it mattered most.
The two Lady Bulldogs were cheered for their historic achievement on social media, by their coaches, Conner Webb and David Gilliam, and by their peers at school and in the community.
These two titles will undoubtedly mark a breakthrough for Lady Bulldog wrestling and pave the way for future stars in the sport.
Also qualifying for the meet in the girl’s division for Sulphur was Bintlee Burch at 145 pounds.
In the boy’s division, six Bulldogs qualified after strong performances in the East Regional at Cushing. They included: Noah Heitland (113), Tristan Barnes (126), Grady Hardoin (132), and Brody Wallace (Hwt.). Only Cole and Mobly, however, were able to medal.
