Sulphur Public Schools received an excellent 2024-25 annual audit report at the regular monthly meeting on Monday.
A representative from Bledsoe, Hewett & Gullekson presented the report via zoom.
The report showed no weaknesses, no non-compliance and no adverse findings in the detailed report represented to members.
Superintendent Matt Holder followed the audit report with the treasurer’s report, stating the district is in very solid financial shape. The report showed a cash balance of more than $10 million in the combined school funds.
Several student guests were present at the meeting including recently named Academic All State recipient, Brody Jennings. Jennings told the members he is grateful for the school and teachers because he credits his success to their guidance and encouragement. Jennings scored a 35 (out of 36) on theACT Exam. Jennings will be one of the first Sulphur students to receive an associate degree from Murray State College, and the same night as he received his high school diploma. Sulphur currently has two students this year to complete this task. Also present was two Sulphur girls who made school history this past weekend by winning girls’ wrestling state champion titles. The two are senior Jolee Thomas, and freshman, Parker Wynn. Both girls also thanked the school for giving them the opportunities to compete and for their support.
Athletic Director Corey Cole reported for the first time since 2013 the boy’s basketball team has advanced to the Area Tournament, which will be played this week. Cole also said nine, boys and three girl wrestlers, made the state tournament and for the first time the boy’s team was named State Academic Champions in wrestling. Late in the meeting, Cole received word the girls powerlifting team had won State Champion for second year in a row. Zoly May won a state title and 3 others were runner-up individually. Cole also reported that track, baseball and golf are starting this week.
Principals Steven Pyle and John Mann updated members on upcoming March events that will be taking place in their buildings. The second grade teachers from the elementary school presented a power point presentation outlining their curriculum and programs being used in the second grade.
In other board action, members approved the following:
•the 2026-2027 school calendar;
•creating an activity account for the Bulldog Booster Club;
•contract with Bledsoe, Hewett and Gullekson for the 2025-2026 school year audit;
•allowing th4e baseball team to travel to Whitesboro, TX for a baseball tournament;
•adding Shelly Ford, Korie Dawn McCracken to substitute list; and
•a $125.00 stipend to all non-certified staff. Following a brief short executive session, members returned to the meeting and approved the resignations of Miranda Laymance and Elizabeth Grey. Members also approved an addendum to the Superintendent’s contract.
