First Christian Church Celebrating New Beginning
Sulphur First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a cherished landmark on the west end of historic downtown Sulphur, has completed a nearly two-year restoration journey after sustaining major damage during the devastating tornado of April 27, 2024.
Built in 1928, the church has long stood as a cornerstone of faith and community in Sulphur. When the tornado struck, significant structural damage occurred as third-story bricks on the east side of the building fell away, and the church’s historic red tile roof required full replacement. Total damages reached approximately $800,000.
After two years of dedicated repair and restoration, the historic property now stands renewed while preserving the character and heritage that generations have known and loved.
Church leaders say one of the most remarkable parts of the story was the protection of the sanctuary and stained glass windows. While the stained glass sustained only minor damage, the sanctuary itself remained largely untouched. Many in the congregation see that as a powerful reminder of God’s presence through the storm.
“Through every challenge, we never lost faith,” said Pastor Randy Martin. “This building is more than bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of hope, resilience, and God’s faithfulness.”
To celebrate the completion of the restoration, the church will host a special worship service on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. The celebration will continue with a lunch at 12:00 noon, followed by tours of the beautifully restored historic building. Community members, former members, and friends are invited to attend.
The completion of the restoration marks not only the rebuilding of a historic structure, but also the strength and perseverance of a congregation determined to move forward together.
As Sulphur continues its broader recovery, First Christian Church stands once again as a beacon of faith, history, and community for the city’s west end and beyond.
