The Sulphur Bulldogs turned in another strong performance Saturday at the Lake Country Conference Track Meet in Madill, the high school boys finishing as conference runner-up and the girls placing fourth overall as both squads continue building momentum for the postseason.
The junior high boys and girls also added to the successful day with strong performances.
Head boy’s coach Emile Heitland said the meet was an important step as the Bulldogs prepare for next week’s regional competition.
“We felt really good about our conference meet,” said Heitland. “It’s always an important step as we prepare for regionals. Our pole vaulters continue to be a major strength for us.”
That strength was on full display as Landy DeArman cleared a personal-record 13 feet to finish second in the pole vault, while Triston Barnes matched his personal best at 13 feet and placed third. Drew Brinson also scored points with a sixth-place finish.
“Along with Drew Brinson, we feel very confident in that group heading into next week,” Heitland said.
Distance standout Morgan Brown continued his record- breaking season, winning the 3200 meters and setting a new school record for the fourth time this year with a personal-best 9:53.15. Brown also captured first place in the 1600 meters to lead Sulphur’s distance crew.
Keaton Seitz added a sixthplace finish in the 3200 with a personal-best 10:38.34, while Andrew Hail placed fifth in the 800 with a PR of 2:05.83 and fifth in the 1600. Calvin Downey was fifth in the 1600, and the 3200-meter relay team of Jaxon Freehill, Hail, Downey and Ayler Dixon finished third.
“It was great to have Mavric Lowrance back after dealing with a hamstring injury,” Heitland said. “He ran a strong leg on the 1600 relay and came out of it feeling good, which is a big boost for us.”
The 1600-meter relay team of Freehill, Eathen Sales, Rush Pittman and Lowrance placed second, while the 400-meter relay team of Nate Wood, Eathen Sales, Dugan Gray and Jackson Haggard finished fourth.
Grady Hardoin turned in one of his best meets of the season, placing second in the 110-meter hurdles and third in the 300-meter hurdles.
“Grady also stepped up with his best 300 hurdles time of the year and was right at his top mark in the 110s,” said Heitland.
Jaxon Freehill also posted a personal-best 52.37 to finish fourth in the 400 meters, while Eathen Sales ran a PR of 23.22 in the 200 meters for sixth place.
