Sulphur Looks To Rebound As They Host A Regional Wednesday

After riding a 10-game winning streak, the Sulphur Bulldogs hit a tough stretch last week with losses to two of Oklahoma’s top programs in Tuttle and Washington. Despite the setbacks, Sulphur remains focused as they prepare to host the regional tournament this Wednesday and Thursday.

The Bulldogs opened the week with an 11-2 loss to Tuttle. Michael Morris got the start on the mound, working four innings and allowing six hits. Brady Foster came on in relief and pitched two innings, giving up five hits.

Offensively, Jax Jackson paced Sulphur with two hits in three atbats. Maddax Mobly and Drake Wood each drove in a run for the Bulldogs.

In the second match-up against Tuttle, Sulphur battled but came up short again. Drake Wood started on the mound, pitching three and one-third innings while allowing five runs on five hits. Jayden McClure came in relief and gave the Bulldogs solid work, tossing three and two-thirds innings while allowing just one hit and one run—none earned—while striking out two and walking one.

Carter Cole led Sulphur offensively from the leadoff spot, collecting two hits in four at-bats. Bridge Barrett, Jax Jackson, and Drake Wood each drove in a run.

The Bulldogs then faced another powerhouse in Washington, where Carter Cole provided the biggest offensive spark. The sophomore went 2-for-3 at the plate and blasted a solo home run.

Traber Sartors got the start on the mound, going four innings and allowing four runs—two earned—on eight hits while striking out three. Bridge Barrett provided strong relief work, throwing two innings and allowing just one hit and one run while recording two strikeouts.

Despite the three losses, head coach Denton Miller remains confident in his team heading into postseason play.

“It was a tough week vs. two top teams in Oklahoma,” said Miller. “We had opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on in each game. But this is nothing to cause for concern. The guys are still locked in and ready to make a run in the playoffs.”

Before regional action begins, Sulphur will celebrate Senior Night on Monday against Noble in what Miller expects to be another strong test.

With the postseason now here, the Bulldogs will look to put last week behind them and defend their home field as they chase a deep playoff run.

Graphic above shows teams in the regional baseball tournament in Sulphur Wednesday and Thursday, April 29-30. Sulphur will host Madill in game 1, set for an 11:00 a.m. Wednesday start. Woodward and Kingfisher will be next at 1:30 p.m. Other games are set for later Wednesday and Thursday.
