There was more bad financial news for Sulphur and Murray County after the release of the Oklahoma Tax Commission’s sales and use tax reports last week.
According to the commission’s figures, monthly collections for the City of Sulphur and Murray County took their third consecutive nosedive since July. Collections to the City of Sulphur have dropped over $109,000 in those three months.
Murray County was also down in collections, an eye-watering $177,000 from the same time frame a year ago, figures show.
For the month of September, representing July business, Sulphur collected $354,788.04 in sales tax compared to $371,425.23 last year at this time. Use tax collections at the city were also down significantly, going from $51,328.06 last year to $34,517.98 this year. All total between the two, the city is down over $32,000 from a year ago, just in one month.
Murray County also experienced a significant decrease in September’s sales tax totals, going from $582,142.39 last year to $503,891.74 this year.
The City of Davis was the only bright spot among the three entities, going from $163,491.31 last year at this time to $170,567.32 this year, almost a $7,000 increase. In use tax collections, Davis remained virtually unchanged from a year ago, at $19,124.63.
Dougherty experienced a slight increase in September sales tax collections with $944.86 compared to $506.17 last year. Their use tax collections were down slightly from a year ago as they brought in $209.39.
Statewide, tax receipts from mid-July to mid-August were up over $11 million with a total disbursement of $223,728,674, according to the tax commission.
