Roger Dale Camp

Roger Dale Camp

Roger Dale Camp, known to his family as “Papa Rog,” passed away on October 12, 2026, at the age of 77 after a long, hard-fought battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Roger’s life stretched from the oil patches of West Texas to the football fields and community of Wynnewood. Roger was born on July 10, 1949, in Bonham, Texas, and grew up in the Permian Basin, where he learned the value of hard work—a lesson he carried throughout his life.

Football became an important part of those early years. He played at Robert E. Lee High School in Midland, graduating in 1967, before continuing his playing career as a running back wearing number 32 at East Central University in Ada. There, he earned his bachelor’s degree in education on May 14, 1971. East Central also brought Roger together with Ava Jo Riddle. They married on June 10, 1972, and welcomed their daughter, Jennifer Nell, on October 9, 1974. They made their home in Wynnewood, where they raised Jennifer and built a life rooted in family, work, and friendships. Roger and Ava Jo shared more than 40 years of marriage before her passing on March 17, 2013.

Roger worked as a business owner, insurance agent, and served his community as a volunteer firefighter for the City of Wynnewood. Football remained part of his life long after his playing days ended, and he returned to the field wearing the white hat as a referee. His work, firefighting, and officiating connected him with people throughout the community and became lasting parts of his story.

His West Texas roots never left him. Roger loved country music, especially George Strait. “The Fireman” and “Amarillo by Morning” were songs that fit the man his family knew. For Jennifer, Roger was Dad — from the days when he held her as a baby through the years when she became a mother herself. Becoming “Papa Rog” was one of his greatest joys. With Cole and Beau came his enduring legacy as “Papa.” When Jennifer married Joel, that legacy grew to include Nick, Dane, and Kelly.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Ava Jo Camp, and his parents, A.D. Camp and Dorthy Kincaid.

He is survived only by his daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Joel Cramer; and his five grandchildren, Nick Cramer, Dane Cramer, Kelly Cramer, Cole Sparks, and Beau Sparks.

He will be remembered best for his genuine smile, funny stories, and classic country songs that tell the story of his life. To those who loved him, he will always be Roger, Dad, and Papa Rog—a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who was a cowboy at heart and a fighter till the end.

Funeral services were held on at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Oct.17 at the First Baptist Church in Wynnewood officiated by Todd McRay with interment following at Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood.

DeArman Funeral Home of Wynnewood was is charge of arrangements.
