Clayton Chalfant Jack
Clayton Chalfant Jack was born on January 20, 1958 in Ardmore, to James Roland and Loura Jean Chalfant Jack. He peacefully passed away on the ranch he loved on July 27, 2022.
He grew up in Sulphur, and graduated from Sulphur High School in 1976. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he studied finance and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Not long after college, he met Julie Akard at the horse races in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and they married in the fall of 1983.
They welcomed the birth of their first daughter, Joanna Claire, in 1984, and he moved his family to his hometown in 1990 where he worked side-by-side with his father. He worked hard as a landman for Jack Exploration, Incorporated where he developed a knowledge and appreciation of the oil and gas industry and a love and stewardship of the land that has been a part of his family’s life and legacy for generations. His family became complete in 1994 when his second daughter, Madeline Jaye, was born. He then purchased Spur J Ranch in 2001, a lifelong dream of his to achieve.
In Sulphur, Clay was instrumental in a number of community organizations and active in numerous efforts including the Murray County EMS Board, Murray County Industrial Authority and the Sulphur/Davis Elks Lodge. He was also a serving board member on Global Gaming Solutions, and a member of Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, American Hereford Association, American Angus Association and the National Cattlemen’s Association.
He took great pride in his work, land, cattle, friends and family. He was a quiet leader, man of integrity, a deep thinker, and most importantly, an amazing father, son, husband, brother, Pappy and loyal friend. His hobbies included golfing, racing thoroughbred horses, bird hunting, fly fishing and watching OU Football. Throughout the chapters of his life, he created a band of brothers that is evident today. Clay had a wonderful sense of humor, and never took himself, or for that matter, anyone else too seriously. You could always depend on Clay Jack no matter what. He enjoyed his life, was loving and dearly beloved by many.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Jack and his father-in-law, James “Shug” Akard.
He is survived by his mother, Jean Jack; sister, Rosemary Talbott and brother-in-law, Rick, brother, Wesley Jack, sister, Amy Jack; the mother of his children, Julie Jack; daughter, Joanna John and son-in-law, Travis John, daughter, Madeline Jack and future son-in-law, Patrick Little; grandsons, Phoenix Clay and Brock Luther John; mother-in-law, June Morris; brother-in-law, Jay Akard and sister-in-law, Micki; nephews, Rick Talbott and Will Talbott and wife, Lauren, and niece, Jean Talbott.
Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday July 30, 2022 at the Sulphur United Methodist Church with Rev. David George officiating.
Honorary bearers were Col. Shawn Barefoot, King Price, Fob Jones, David Pierce, Alan Watson, Jeremy Hall, John Newbern, Clayton Lodes, Brian Blalock, Greg Ayres, Colton Thompson, Tom Cronin, Kelly Cornelius, Brian Hollis, Jamey John, Delvin Heldermon, Steve Brown, Mike Austin, Paul Aaron, and Bobby Rose.
