Dennis Leroy Stacy

“Den, Denny, Dennis the Menace” was born November 12, 1948 in Sulphur to Marjorie (Earl) and George Stacy, Jr. He passed away at his home in Sulphur on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at the age of 75 years, four months and 16 days. Denny was surrounded by his two daughters and his grandchildren at the time of his passing. He had battled types of cancer for the past six months.

Denny was a son, father, grandfather, firefighter, “best” water skier in Murray County and taught people to ski at Arbuckle Lake. Denny grew up in Sulphur, attending Sulphur High School, graduating in 1967. He was a part of the only baseball team of Sulphur High School to win the state title.

After school, he attended OSU and completed all requirements and training to become one of the first compensated firemen for Sulphur. Denny was a Sulphur fireman for 26 years, three of them as Sulphur Fire Chief. At one time, he was voted as Murray County’s Favorite Fireman. Denny also served in the Oklahoma National Guard He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, the Oklahoma Firefighters Association and the Oklahoma Retired Firefighters Association.

While working as a full-time firefighter, he also worked for his father’s oil and gas company. After retiring in 2001, he began working for the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety as a driver’s license examiner. Denny held this position for eight years until he retired again. This time he stated he would rather run into a building on fire than get into a vehicle with teenagers.

Denny’s favorite hobbies included water skiing, teaching others to ski, and camping at the lake with family and friends. He worked hard to purchase his own vehicles and enjoyed showing them off and racing them.

Denny was married to Suzanne McDowell in February, 1974 and from this union was born two daughters, Darcy and Jill Stacy. The couple was married for 17 years. After having two daughters, he dedicated his life to them, always making sure they had everything they wanted or needed within reason. He was known for “squeaking” when he walked for being so tight with money to save for his girls.

In 2001, Denny was blessed with his granddaughter, Mikayla and four years later, his grandson, Cache was born.

Denny is survived by his two daughters, Darcy Gardner and husband Dave and Jill Freeman. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mikayla and Cache Freeman; granddogs Toby and Tucker and great granddog, Vader.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents and the mother of his children, Suzanne McDowell.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church in Sulphur with Rev. Bill Leveridge officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur under the direction of DeArman Funeral Home of Sulphur.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan Peters, Todd McDowell, Alan McKay, Larry Shipman, Rick McNeil, Carl Wade and Keith Barnett.

Honorary bearers will be Bill Anderson, Randy Williams, David Gardner and Sulphur Fire Department members and retirees.
