James Joseph Ramey

James Joseph Ramey was born on July 7, 1935, in Leavenworth, KS to the late James L. and Lillie J. (Felix) Ramey. He died on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, in Ardmore, at the age of 88 years. In 1957, James married the former Ms. Charlene Hartman and to this marriage were born four children, Benitia, Jimbo, Peter and Cindy. On April 23, 1969, James and Dorothy Jean (Alsup) Morgan were united in marriage in Dallas, TX. She preceded him in death on December 11, 2006.

James grew up in Leavenworth. He joined the United States Air Force, serving from August 12, 1954, until he was honorably discharged on September 25, 1962. After his service to our country, James returned home to Leavenworth, where he spent several years working as a firefighter. In 1974, he and his family moved to El Reno, OK, where he attended El Reno Junior College, earning an associate degree in accounting. Although he had his degree in accounting, James pursued a different career path. He devoted 20+ years of his life to law enforcement, serving as a sheriff’s deputy for Canadian County, as well as for Murray County.

Survivors include his daughter, Benitia Beesley and husband, R.O. of Davis; two sons, Jimbo Ramey and wife, Rhonda of El Reno and Peter Ramey and wife, Teresa of Cedar Falls, IA; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; one sister, Joan Shockey of Leavenworth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, James preceded in death by one daughter, Cindy Bluford; six sisters, Margie Winchell, Babe Hooper, Florence Whittet, Mollie White, Gertie Derzenski and Kattie Coleman; the mother of his children, Charlene Graphman; and two stepchildren, Linda Senters and Michael Morgan.
