Joe Frank Sledd

Funeral services for Joe Frank Sledd, 85, of Hickory, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 20. at Hickory Baptist Church with Pastor Terry Neal officiating. Burial will follow at the Hickory Cemetery in Hickory.

Mr. Sledd passed January 9, 2024 at Copperas Cove Nursing & Rehabilitation in Copperas Cove, Texas. He was born March 20, 1938, in Sulphur, to the late Robert Lee and Ina Mae (Cape) Sledd.

Joe was friendly, humble, and a family man who was a skilled automotive mechanic. He enjoyed fishing, quail hunting, and ranching with his small herd of cattle. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Hickory Volunteer Fire Department and attended Hickory Baptist Church were he taught Sunday School and provided the devotional each week over the years. He was always quick to volunteer to help someone, the church, or the community when needed.

Joe grew up in the Hickory area, attending Hickory Elementary and graduation from Hickory High School. He worked both as a ranch hand and mechanic. In school, he met the love of his life, Margaret Ann King, and they were married on December 12, 1959. Joe entered the U.S. Army in 1960 and was honorably discharged on September 12, 1962. During his military service, he completed basic and advanced training at Ft. Hood, Texas followed by service in Germany. Joe returned to his family and Hickory following his honorable discharge in 1962. In 1963, Joe and Margaret built a house in Hickory where they lived the remainder of their lives together.

Upon returning home from the Army, Joe worked at McCarley Oldsmobile, Buick and GMC in Sulphur as an automotive technician for over 12 years before joining the Eidson Chevrolet, Buick, and Pontiac dealership in Sulphur where he worked until he retired. Following his retirement, he focused on his family and his community.

Survivors include one son, Keith Sledd, and wife Wendy, of Gatesville, Texas; two sisters, Sharon Hucks, of Wynnewood, and Shirley Barnett of Florida; one granddaughter, Jennifer Carson, and husband Jeff of Fayetteville, N.C., and two great grandchildren, Paige Cardon and Dalton Cardon, along with other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Margaret Sledd; three brothers, L. D. Sledd, Gomer Sledd and James Sledd; two sisters, Charlene Glover and Mary Dell Williams.

Bearers will be Donny King, Chad King, Greg King, Jeff King, Jeff Carson and Justin Franklin.

The family asks those who wish to make memorials in honor of Joe to the Hickory Baptist Church, 6210 Madison Rd., Roff, OK 74865.
