He married Veronica (Okamoto) Mares in Montebello, CA on May 1, 1993.

John grew up in California, where he graduated from High School. He served on the Los Angeles Police Force for 25 years before retirement. He earned a degree in Criminal Justice and had served in the U.S. Army. Living in Sulphur since 2007, John attended Crossway Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Valentine Victor Mares and a daughter, Melanie Mares.

Surviving are his wife, Veronica Mares, of Sulphur; daughter, Selina Fish and Tray; sons, Vincent Mares, Jonathan Mares, and Michael Mares; one grandchild, Tray Fish, Jr.; one brother, Richard Mares; and two sisters, Chris Castillio and Lucy Atkinson,
