Sulphur firemen continue to battle hot spots early Monday after a fire of undetermined origin destroyed Mares Bakery in the downtown area. Two businesses adjacent to the bakery were damaged, officials said.

Adjacent Firms Saved, But Damaged In Monday Blaze

Sulphur firemen responding to a downtown building fire early Monday were met with a fully engulfed structure at 1014 West 3rd Street, the site of Mares Bakery.

According to Sulphur Fire Marshall Tracey Laxton, the building and contents were a total loss.

Two buildings adjacent to the structure, the accounting firm of Peppinger, Reed & Thomas, and a record’s storage area for Sulphur Abstract, to the south, and the Elaine Howe Law Firm, to the north, sustained heat and smoke damage, according to Laxton.
