Memories Of Sallie Carder

Arbuckle Footnotes

From time to time I have presented slave narratives written by W.P.A. field writers in an attempt to show how life really was for the slaves.  Some were pretty bad conditions with harsh treatment.  This narrative is about as bad as any I have read.  Please excuse the style of writing used by the white, 1930’s form.  I am presenting it as it was written.  Mrs. Carder lived in Berwin, OK.

I was born in Jackson, Tennessee, and I’m going on 83 years. My mother was Harriett Neal and father Jeff Bills, both of them named after their masters. I has one brother, J. B. Bills, but all de rest of my brothers and sisters is dead.
