A striking example of the symbolic power of the American Flag is the famous photo of U.S. Marines valiantly hoisting the Colors on Iwo Jima in 1945. Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press caught the afternoon flag-raising in his Pulitzer Prize-winning photo. This bronze sculpture displays the moment caught in the photo. It is displayed at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Washington, D.C. President Dwight D. Eisenhower dedicated the memorial in a ceremony on November 10, 1954. The flag flies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by presidential proclamation. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE PHOTO
